Magnetic refrigeration is transforming beverage cooling: efficiency estimated above 50%

A breakthrough in energy efficiency

Magnetic refrigeration is emerging as one of the most promising innovations in beverage cooling, delivering up to 30% lower electricity consumption and a potential efficiency improvement of over 50% compared to traditional gas compression systems.

The topic was explored during the talk “Fresh thinking: unlocking growth through the power of cooling innovation”.

 

Data from the first commercial prototypes

During the session, Alessandro Pastore, Professor at Bologna Business School and co-founder of Camfridge Ltd, together with journalist Emma Jane Barltrop, presented real-world data from the first commercial prototypes of solid-state magnetic refrigeration beverage coolers. Findings from scientific studies and industry conferences highlighted clear performance advantages over conventional systems.

New opportunities for retail environments

Beyond energy savings, magnetic refrigeration also offers new design and functional opportunities. In competitive settings such as supermarkets and retail outlets, it enables the development of coolers with larger display areas, lower energy consumption and competitive purchasing costs at scale.

Flexible power supply and sustainability

Another key benefit is power supply flexibility: these systems can operate using small batteries or solar panels, making them particularly suitable for sustainable solutions and emerging distribution models.
